Combining flame treatments with aerosols of functional polymer solutions opens up new opportunities for the activation and the functionalization of polymer surfaces.

Flame treatments of polymer surfaces have distinct advantages over other surface activation technologies in certain areas of application (https://lnkd.in/e8pimE-K). In a collaboration between EsseCI and Fraunhofer IAP we have explored the opportunities of combining flame treatments with aqueous solutions of functional polymers. In the result, the surface treatments are much more stable. The surface energy remains on a high level for one year and longer. Moreover, compared to other surface activation techniques the new approach allows a much broader range of surface chemistries resulting in completely new performance levels and new areas of application.

This kind of treatment was demonstrated on a pilot scale film converting machine with 30 cm wide PP and PET films at processing speed of up 80 m/ min.
